Research

My particular research interest is the role that the region as an entity plays in learning and economic development.

I'm a Visiting Fellow in the Education Department at Newcastle University and am currently researching for a PhD part-time at Newcastle University, entitled:    ' Debatable Lands - the form and function of the regional perspective in lifelong learning.'

My joint supervisors are Prof Frank Coffield of the Department of Education and Dr John Tomaney of CURDS.

I have also written and edited a number of books and articles:

  • Meeting Halfway - some approaches to Basic Education with Single Homeless People  ( co-written with Sue Williamson and Danny Levine ) ALBSU/NLDC 1987

  • Investing Partners: further education, economic development and regional policy ( co-written with Greg Clark ) FEDA 1997

  • FE: aspects of economic development FEDA 1998

  • "Recognizing the Roles of Further Education in Economic Development" in learning.now: Skills for an Information Economy edited by Stuart A Rosenfeld Community College Press 2000

  • "The case for a regional dimension to lifelong learning in the UK" in Policies, Politics and the Future of Lifelong Learning edited by Ann Hodgson Kogan Page 2000

I'm a member of the Regional Studies Association and a supporter of the Campaign for the English Regions
